New research into house insurance claims has shown that theft can add 42 per cent to the cost of a premium, meaning that homeowners should be doing all that they can to ensure that their valuables are safe from the prying eyes of burglars and petty thieves.

As Hannah Jones, home insurance expert at MoneySupermarket which published the statistic, said: “No one wants to pay more than they have to for their insurance.”

While some burglaries may be planned in advance, others by so-called opportunistic thieves take place when they make a spontaneous decision to commit theft – for example, when they spot a flat-screen TV through someone’s window when the car is not in the driveway, suggesting the homeowner may be out.

One way to help prevent this from happening is to ensure that contents are always out of view. Vertical blinds could be ideal for this purpose as they let light through when you want, while just a quick switch sees them close and obscure the interior of your home from view from the outside.
